As our company grows, we’re constantly reminded that it can take up to two years for someone to master a task. These tasks range from shoveling and raking material to operating equipment like skid loaders, sweepers, and pavers. Our employees truly master skills that help to reduce downtime for our clients and increase the overall quality of our work. In our daily work, we help people get where they’re going by paving streets and parking lots, but it’s about a lot more than that. It’s about meeting people where they are in life and walking along side those in our community who are experiencing difficult times. We often interact with the people who live on the very streets and parking lots we maintain. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to give back to our community, helping those who are facing challenges to be seen, heard, and cared for. This practice has not only allowed our owners and staff to appreciate the blessings we have, but also to treat everyone with the respect they deserve. With this mindset, our company culture is one that uplifts not only our clients but their customers and the broader community we serve.

In the early '80s, Steve Ballard spent his weekends sealcoating, striping, and sweeping parking lots alongside his father-in-law, Chris “Red” Hargens. When Chris retired in 1982, Steve and his wife, Kathy, took over operations of the business. To accommodate its growth, they built a home office and machine shed on the south side of Sioux Falls in 1993. Expanding their offerings, they added crack filling, patching, and paving services. After years of dedicated work in the family business, Steven and Jeff Ballard purchased the company from their father in 2019. They established a new location southwest of Sioux Falls and remain committed to continuing the legacy of quality service and attention to detail that Ballard Asphalt has provided to the Sioux Empire for over 40 years.
